One thing I really wanted to use this blog for is to show the real costs of barrel racing. Every month I am going to keep track of all my horsey expenses and make a summary post about them. But that’s not all, I am also going to keep track of the miles AND hours we drive to get to the shows and rodeos. I work a full-time job and I want to show the costs of barrel racing as a regular person (not earning a living by riding, I just work so I can spend money on my horse). Eventually I want to also have other contributors, where I give them a form to fill out and track their expenses for a month to show more than my perspective and show there is room for everyone in our industry no matter the level of competition and how much or little you get to barrel race. This will not only show examples of what the real costs are, but also that the amount you spend is up to you.

Now onto the recap:
January was a low spend month for me. With the horses still on winter break, we did not travel anywhere to shows, although I did spend money on entry fees. How is this possible?? I am paying for my slot race entry and have made the second payment of $200 this month. I made the deposit to keep my slot in October (also $200), but I am including it here as well because the slot race is this year.
I bought 4 bags of feed that were $22 each and a probiotic supplement for $68.99. I average about 4 bags of feed a month, sometimes more in the summer when Stinger is under heavy work. The supplement will last a couple months. Something to note, we make our own hay in the summer so there will not be a cost for that, but when I buy something that we use while baling hay I will include that instead.
The final cost I had this month was $95 for Stinger’s shoes to be reset.
